Treason Suspect Wants Speedy Trial
The Former Acting House Speaker in the Gyude Bryant-led National Transitional Government of Liberia (NTGL), George
Koukou, has called on the Government of Liberia (GOL) to have a speedy trial in his case as was done in the case of the
other alleged coup plotters.
In a statement issued in Monrovia recently, Mr. Koukou said that since they were arrested on July 18, 2007 for allegedly
planning insurgence to unseat the democratically elected government of President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, two of the
suspects, former AFL General, Charles Julu and Col. Andrew Dorbor, have been indicted while his fate is still undecided.
In a statement which was issued by Koukou’s lawyer, Attorney Lofen komeah, the former acting speaker said that the
government of Liberia has failed to indict him since in fact they noted that there were enough evidences to prove that he
Koukou had conspired to stage a coup.
Mr. Koukou noted that following his arrest on July 18, 2007, he was charged on July 20 and subsequently sent to prison
and up to present, there has been no move by the government to indict him.
He claimed that the government of Liberia lacks substantial evidence or clue to indict him as a treason suspect but rather
using the process to destroy his high earned reputation that he as a peaceful citizen has built over the years.
The Former Acting Speaker accused the Human Rights and the International Community of sitting back and watching their
rights being violated by a government who has in every corner preached for the respect of human rights.
Mr. Koukou further maintained that he wants to be indicted after being charged, so as to be tried rather than to be treated
with clemency.
He said the central prison has been his home for a very long time without the government indicting him as an alleged coup
plotter; something Mr. Koukou noted is a complete violation of his rights as a citizen of the land.
He also indicated that the so-called human right advocates who once spoke against the abuse of Human Rights during
past regimes are now watching citizen rights being violated without commenting because according to him they are now in
the driver’s seat.
“I know that I did not plan any act to overthrow the Government of Liberia (GOL) and they claimed that I have done so. Why
can’t they indict me so that we can commence the trial?” Koukou lamented.
The former Acting Speaker of the House of Representatives was arrested along with former AFL General, Charles Julu and
retired Colonel, Andrew Dorbor for architecting plans that would lead to the unseating of the democratically elected
government of Madam Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.
Following the arrest, they were charged with the crime of Treason, a first degree felony and sent to the Monrovia Central
Prison, a place they have been up to present. But out of the three suspects that were arrested and charged, only two have
been indicted while the fate of the other, Mr. George Koukou is still in limbo.
The accused added that he wants the Government of Liberia to indict him and send him to court if it has a case to prove.
According to him, Liberian people will like to know the truth surrounding the alleged plot so as to enable them get the real
facts behind his arrest and detention.
