Pres. Johnson-Sirleaf Welcomes Cote d’Ivoire To MRU

President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has welcomed Cote d’Ivoire’s decision to join the Mano River Union (MRU). Ivorian President
Laurent Gbagbo announced his country’s decision yesterday in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire, following talks with the Liberian leader.

Speaking after conferring his country’s highest national honor on President Johnson Sirleaf at a state banquet in Abidjan,
President Gbagbo said his country had accepted the invitation to join the MRU, due to enormous challenges facing the sub-
region.

He praised his Liberian counterpart for her consistent role in encouraging women on the African continent. President Gbagbo
challenged women to persist if they are to be successful in their endeavors.

He also called on them to emulate President Johnson- Sirleaf after she achieved an unprecedented feat of becoming Africa’s
first democratically elected female president amidst all the odds.

President Gbagbo also expressed his concern about the rising prices of basic commodities in some African countries and
stressed the need for all countries to form a collective front to tackle the problem.

For her part, President Johnson-Sirleaf said she welcomed Cote d’Ivoire’s decision to join the MRU family and emphasized that
this would be to the ultimate benefit to the Union.

During her visit to Cote d’Iviore, the Liberian leader also participated in the 10th anniversary celebrations of African Female
Parliamentarians. In her remarks to the gathering, she observed that women across the continent have made considerable
strides in rising to key positions, but admitted that more needs to be done.

President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf and entourage have returned home following a two-day official visit to La Cote d’Ivoire.
